What is Manufacturing Entropy
1. What it is
Manufacturing Entropy is the breakdown of your value-producing system. Erosion is where that value is breaking down.
Value stream mapping maps where you\'re making value. Manufacturing Entropy maps where you\'re losing value, and that\'s called erosion.
All established processes suffer entropy. This is just specific to manufacturing.
2. What causes it
Value erodes through five sources: Machine, Flow, Information, People, and Organization.
3. Lean
Lean removes waste from the process. Manufacturing Entropy asks a different question first: where is value eroding, and which source owns the loss? That helps lean effort land where the leak actually is.
The two work together. Lean gives you the tools; Manufacturing Entropy helps point them.
4. Problem solving
I frame the problem before I try to solve it. First, find where value erodes. Then separate what is known from what is assumed, and don't call a cause known while it's still a guess.
A clear problem statement can save more time than a fast answer to the wrong question.
5. Ownership
Ownership should sit as close as possible to the source of erosion, so the person closest to the problem owns the fix. That's about empowerment, never blame.
6. Continuous improvement
Continuous improvement works better when effort is aimed at the real erosion, not at whatever the dashboard shows. The costly losses are often quiet: value leaving while the board still looks fine.
7. Fewer quality incidents
Erosion that is caught and owned near its source can turn into fewer quality incidents.
That is the point of all of it: more time producing value, and less of it lost along the way.
JEDI is meant to limit the value erosion in your plant's communications. See the offers.
